Outsidespace | Landscape works | site08 events
Walking the Land's selection of artworks which celebrate and respond to our local landscape and greenspaces.
Following the success of last years exhibition 18 newly selected Gloucestershire artists come together in 'Outside Space', each to offer their unique vision and to explore the relationship between art and landscape.
British landscape art is incredibly popular with the viewing public, reflecting our National affection for the countryside but also our fear of it's potential loss.
Gloucestershire's countryside offers some of the most visually stimulating landscapes in the country. But as more of us live in towns and cities, we've become gradually separated from our landscape roots. In 'Outside Space' we see local artists relocating us with the landscape and green spaces through their artwork.
Their role is to confront and challenge the viewer's expectations of landscape and into accepting both the tradition of representational landscape painting, as well as a newer more contemporary interpretation of the subject involving other approaches, disciplines and media.
This event will run as part of ‘Love Parks Week’, a nationwide celebration of parks.

Racking Fields Installation | site07 events

racking fields

Walking the Land brought artists together to recreate the ‘Racking Fields’, exploring the legacy and relationship between the landscape and the textiles industry in the Stroud Valleys. A combination of still and moving images were projected onto the recreated ‘racking fields’ situated on the Cotswold hillside above Stroud. illustrative of the effect of our past, present and future lifestyles on the landscape.
Walking The Land’s colour projections are reminiscent of the textile industry and agricultural legacy; their black and white moving images show the inside and outside landscape experienced on a late walk home through Rodborough, while Oogoo Maia’s ‘Net Curtain’ suggest more frenetic change, asking what hides in the dark; what we choose to ignore; what will never be said in daylight; who we decide not to be; what comes out at night? Forgotten things that suddenly hit back.

Transforming | site06

Walking the Land’ and invited artists responded to the changes that will be brought about by the restoration of the Stroudwater Canal, it’s surroundings, infrastructure and impact on the local community.
During the weekend, they transformed Capel Mill, an old river-side dye mill, into a temporary gallery, projecting and showing of the work of participating artists, photographers, writers, returning shoppers and dog-walkers. Contributing artist Oogoo Maia's sound and sculpture installation 'Tear Here' dealt with issues of memory, abandonment and remembrance. Sean Borodale & Louisa Fairclough's study explored the sounds encountered on a journey around Stroud by bicycle.
At 'ArtMIll', Artists harnessed the power of the River Frome as a source of inspiration and energy. In this participatory event, members of the Public were encouraged to create works using drawing, water-powered sculpture and photography.

Cokes Pitt | Summer 2006

Coke's Pit was excavated for gravel extraction 40 years ago, and was given to the Water Parks Society in 2002.
Cokes Pit is a small lake created from a disused gravel pit close to Keynes Country Park in the Cotswold Water Park. It’s home to breeding reed bunting, tufted duck & great crested grebe; water vole, examples of the rare water carophytes, water shrew and nightingale; vast numbers of dragonflies; and lesser bearded stonewort. It is used by local people mainly, plus a few anglers, and bird watchers.
Walking the Land Artists Tom Keating and Kel Portman worked with members of the Cotswold Water Park Young people and local families to develop a creative mapping project - mapping the wildlife specially the birds, the flowers and grasses and the land and waterscape of the Pit itself, looking at the history of the Pit, or creating histories and stories for the area.

Pitchcombe | site04

Made over several days, the work was inspired by walks through the Cotswold woodland close to Pitchcombe, referring to the not just the natural but also the ‘made’ elements that are incorporated into our visual environment. ‘Drawing on Landscape' was held as part of the annual Stroud Valley Artspace ‘site04’ Festival of Visual Art. It featured not only their paintings, drawings, photographs and prints, but also works by members of the public who were encouraged to join them on one of their workshops; ‘Walks with Artists’, inviting them to share their experiences by making photographs, drawing and even poems.
